Among those speaking will be noted writers and publishers from Redding, as well as Bay-area authors who will talk about publishing on demand and using social media tools to develop and engage an audience for you work. Authors take note.

Educator and multi-media trainer Donna Eyestone will be looking at how you can enrich your online presence with podcasting, sound and moving images. Eyestone was a content developer for Apple and has taught classes for several years through @One online.

    Is all this new social media actually replacing going out and meeting other people face to face and will this basically change the way we interact with people in real life in the future.

  2. March 28th, 2010 at 16:30 | #2

    That’s a good question, Rich, and I’ll see that it gets asked. Usually, “older” technology doesn’t go away, but remains part of the mix.

    Do you think that facebook, twitter and blogging are a sufficent means of getting information needed for sharing important information that someone might need to know about a future Job carrer, or even posting a piece of writing, and hopeing it will be read by the right people and then help you be able to write a book? Or do you think it’s just for basic every day communication to find out what’s going on in your family and friends lives or maybe both?

  4. March 29th, 2010 at 13:32 | #4

    Social media probably will mean more work for us all the short run. I suspect we’ll have to do both. You raise an important point-if a message is important, can you trust it to social media alone. This goes beyond the old, technical, questions about whether email can be trusted to actually make it into the recipient’s in-box. It deals with whether your intended audience/reader will even attend to the message or take it with the same gravity as an application on, lay, linen paper. Do “old-school” ways still have an edge?

    What are some personal issues or frustrations people often encounter when using social networking type sites for business purposes? Do the benefits outweigh the frustrations?
    If not is there an untapped market for a more business oriented networking site?

    Is blogging really the best way to tell people something? I agree that it is good for short informational tid-bits but do you think a real conversation would be better in the long run?

    With such great advancements in technology, we no longer need to wait for the newspaper to know what’s happening in the city lately, nor do we need to wait for our monthly magazine subscriptions to get the latest news about our hobbies and whatnot. I write stories here and there, but when it comes to major writers, how will this affect their careers? for good or for bad?

    Do you think that Twitter, blogging, and Facebook will change the way our future generations interact and maybe make it harder for them to face their problems or meet or talk with people face to face?

    I’ve been hearing about twitter for quite some time now, however I don’t really know what the purpose of the site is. I’ve asked a few people and they’ve all said that it is used for blogging and that they don’t know much more than that. I’ve even go to the site myself in hopes that I would be able to find out more about twitter, but I personally found it to be slightly confusing and hard to get around. So my question is, what exactly is twitter and what is it’s purpose?

    Is our new social media causing a more negative or positive effect in the long run for the younger generation that hasnt been exposed to old school ways of approaching problems or meeting people and are their new statistics on these questions? Another question is if due to our dependancy of our social media has suicide rates went up?

    Why do people keep joining places like Facebook if they have to swich to what is the new hot place to be apart of?

  18. May 2nd, 2010 at 16:59 | #18

    @Raven Groover
    The answer to this will change, but for now many people are networking – keeping in touch with old friends AND looking for friends of friends who have parallel interests. This is an old practice that the web, but the web has added new tools. Linkedin has more of a business take on things, but Facebook has helpful tools, too.

  19. May 2nd, 2010 at 17:02 | #19

    @Jennifer
    Twitter is much like text messaging on your phone but for the web. Celebrities may use it to keep themselves in the public eye, and newspapers may use it as a headline service that draws people back to their own website. I’ve even seen it used for emergency announcements. One of the speakers at the 4-24 social media conference, Silas Lyons, gave an interesting talk about how The Record Searchlight evolved in using this tool.

    Data mining is a real thing.

    Check out http://www.spokeo.com This site has tons of personal info, some of it mined from Facebook. There’s an opt-out link that allows you to remove your name from the directory, though. Facebook is handy, but be careful about what you put up there.

    so do you think that in the near future it will be mandatory, to properly function in our culture/society, to know and use technology even if we don’t want to and are perfectly happy to not be involved in these socializing forums?
    Yes I realize this assignment is well over due and a mute point at this stage of the game. but I wanted you to know that I have been going through trying to catch up, and besides, I would love an answer from you. your opinion will be interesting as I get the impression that you are quite computer savvy. lol
